Stones

How they are used for teachings in the Bible

I.MEMORIALS. Stones commemorate significant events.
1.Jacob used a stone to commemorate his vision at Bethel of the staircase with angels ascending and descending, where God spoke a blessing to him. Genesis 28:10-22.2. Jacob used stones to signify the covenant between he and Laban. Genesis 31:34-54.3.Joshua used stones as a memorial of the place where God provided an opening in the Jordan river so the priests and people could cross it and enter the promised land. Joshua 4:5-7.
4. Joshua set up a pile of rocks to commemorate God turning away from his fierce anger after the punishment of Aachan. Joshua 7:25-26.
5. Joshua set jp a stone to remind the people that they had promised to obey the covenant. Joshua 24:21-27.

II.COMMANDMENTS
1.Joshua wrote words of the law on tablets of uncut stones.
2.God wrote the Ten Commandments of tablets of stone. Exodus 24:12 and the second time in Exodus 34:1-11.

III. PUNISHMENT: Death by stoning.
1.Stoning for blasphemy. Numbers 15:30 and 36.
2. Stoning for th need to purge evil. Deuteronomy 21:21
3. Stoning as a punishment for lying and thus causing harm to the people. Joshua 7:25

IV. DISPLAY OF GOD’S POWER
David killed Goliath with a stone. 1 Samuel 17:40-47

V.HEARTS OF STONE
1.Describes people who refuse to pay attention to God. Zecharia 7:11-12.
2.God will replace hearts of stone with hearts of flesh. Ezekiel 11:19 and 36:26.

VI. STONY GROUND
Jesus describes the hearts of those who accept the Word but do not continue. Mark 4:5.

VII. FOUNDATION STONES: LITERAL AND FIGURATIVE
1.The temple courtyard. I Kings 7:9-11.
2.Jesus as the rejected stone that becomes the cornerstone. Acts 4:113. quoting Psalm .118:22
3. Jesus as the cornerstone. Ephesians 2:19-22

VIII. LIVING STONES
you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 1Peter 2:5.
Being a living stone involves: 
1.Offering our bodies: Romans 12:1
2.Offerings are “acceptable sacrifices” Philippians 4:8
3. Our praises are sacrifices. Hebrews 13:15
4. Doing god is a sacrifice pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16

IX. TEMPTATIONS INVOLVED STONES
1. Satan dared Jesus too turn stones into bread. Matthew 4:3
2. Satan reminded Jesus of the promise in Psalm 91:11-12

X. THE WHITE STONE
Jesus promises those who are victorious that they will receive a personal token. Revelation 2:17
